WHEN TECHNOLOGY FAILS US.

Now most of us start our day by turning off the alarm that wakes us up in the morning, turning on the television to watch the morning news and start the microwave or coffee machine for that first cup of java. And then of course we also turn on our computers or check our smart phones for any e-mails or messages that might have come in during the night.

Now granted we might have a moment or time in our life when one or two of the above mentioned items may not work the way that we want them to do. But when everything goes wrong we just totally fall apart.

It’s as if we were magically transported into the dark ages. Then again I think that the dark ages for us would be to go back in time to the early nineteen eighties. Our attitudes and personality just completely change and what was once starting to be an average or good day becomes the day from hell.

And that was what happened to me today. It turned into not a day from hell for me, but more like how many flaming hoops and hurdles do I have to jump over and run around passed just to complete my day. Now of course there has been blog posting about technology and how great it is, and its faults.

But when those faults come up in technology we all act start to act like crack heads looking for our next drug fix. And for most of us it can be frustrating, I was a little frustrated today for everything that I needed to do, just could not be done at the moment that I wanted to do it. We all start our days and maybe nights with an idea of what we want to do.

And we are all guilty of not having a “plan b” when things that we do on a regular basis don’t go exactly as planned. Come to think of it… Do we ever think about having a “plan b” when a regular day goes wrong? Probably not… We do more “plan b” thinking when we do something major or special in our lives than for a regular day.

And when a day does start to go wrong, we all try to adjust accordingly, and then there are those moments when you just need to laugh and walk away and come back to it later. For me today was the latter of the two. After taking a short break myself from job hunting and just recently getting back into the groove of looking again, with a type of “gun ho” attitude ready to start once again my search for employment.

Everything and anything in its own little way, just did not work out the way that I wanted it to do. Or not at lease right away. Starting with having problems connecting to the internet with my net book, to my blackberry service not working properly.

Eventually all was fixed and is now working. But it’s quite interesting how the littlest things we take for granted can wreak havoc on our daily routine. For it does make you wonder sometimes how we was able to manage our daily lives ten, twenty years ago.

THE PARTY’S OVER, BACK TO REALITY.

Well… The time spent for rest and relaxation is now over and it’s now time to get back into the groove of looking for work and managing my life. I do have to admit that the break was very good and well needed. And it has been fun catching up on things and working on my photography, a very good way to relax and see things in a different light.

Of course I will still continue my photography for I have found that it’s quite a stress reliever. But as we all know everything does come to an end. I could take a few more days, but I have chosen not to. It had been an interesting week not looking for work and taking the time off to do so.

For you start to catch up on what you have missed in general such as seeing friends and doing errands that one might have put off for some time. And in an odd little way, catch up on all the news on television as well.

But at least when I now start my search for employment it will be with a clearer state of mind. For taking the break has put me at ease from the stress of searching for work. What I plan to do the next time is not wait so long to take another break. I might just start using the weekends to relax and purge now than continue my employment hunting on Saturday’s and Sunday’s.

Other than that I am looking forward to starting my search again and seeing what happens this time around. It feels as if I am starting a part of my life all over again, but this time around with a much better focus on what needs to be done.

And what I am feeling now is a good thing and in a way a sign that my time off was a good and well deserved thing to do. It’s like as if I had gone on a vacation and everything about it was perfect. So from here on it’s all about moving forward and advancing.

So with that said… I feel ready and interested to see what life is going to pass my way now.

TAKING IN A LITTLE “R AND R.”

Sometimes with all the running around that we all do. We might forget to take a nice short or long break, a vacation or just taking a little time off from the things that we normally do. I will admit that I am guilty of doing just so. But recently I have decided to take a small break from job hunting, not that long only a few days.

I had thought that it would be the best thing to do at this time and it will give me a moment to regroup and think things over. And I have to admit that it was one of the best moves I have ever made since becoming unemployed.

I see it like this… My bills are paid in advance for a few months. And any and all major issues have been taken care of (except finding work of course.) But besides not finding work everything else is fine. So in a way I am taking a “mental health” period to regroup.

And it has been enjoyable, catching up with friends, relaxing, going out, and also picking up one of my hobbies again (photography) and actually I have not done photography in a few years, but I am glad to have picked it up again. Actually missed the fun I had doing it. It’s funny how you can forget the little things that make you happy, but once you rediscover them it brings a new joy back into your life.

Or in an odd way makes you wonder why you stopped in the first place. And trust me I did think that too. But it has been a good experience so far. Taking this break is definitely one of the best things that I have ever done. Now my break of course will not be that long, maybe just a week. Because I feel that would be enough time for me.

As well I don’t want to get to lazy and stop any and all search for employment. As long as I keep my time frame in mind I feel that I should be more relaxed and focus at the task at hand when I start my search again.

For those folks that say “I can’t take a break now.” I say…. “Yes you can take a break.” For the only thing that is stopping you is yourself and no one else. Just take your time to plan it out and don’t rush into the process. In the short or long run it will be worth it.

It does not have to be a major or big vacation; it can be simple as just taking a few days and resting at home. And once you have done so you just might feel better about yourself and life in general. I feel that one has nothing to lose and everything to gain when taking a little time off.

STARTING A NEW CATEGORY (PHOTOGRAPHY) MAY 2010.

Photography has been one of my passions and one that I have enjoyed for many years. To me it is an art form that reaches out to every person. How one person interprets a photograph, another individual might interpret it in a totally different way. Differences in how one views things are just one of the many ways that make mankind unique. And in some cases a photograph can bring people together as well.

Composition, focus, balance, exposure, location, is just one of the few aspects of photography. I feel that when one takes a photograph a part of them is within the picture taken as if a person’s soul is within the photo. It could be a thought, an idea, or a story that one is trying to tell through this medium.

Words can only tell a small part of a story, but a photograph I feel can bring more to what is being told in such a story. So along with my regular blog postings there will be now from time to time a photo journal and or travelogue.

For me this is just a small part of the beauty and passion of photography. May you enjoy this new category as you will soon see the world through my eyes via the photos that will be taken in the near future.

FRIDAY, THE END OF THE WEEK AND TIME TO REGROUP.

Another week is now coming to a close and after spending the week doing research on places for possible employment, and actually this week I have sent out quite a few resumes, more than in the past few weeks actually. Which to me might be a good sign, I now have to take a step back and regroup on what to do next.

Kind of like a game of chess, where after you make your move you wait for your competitors move and then strategize on what your next move will be. It’s kind of the same when it comes to job hunting. You have an idea on where you want to send your resume out to. But after that you have to plan the next step and process on where to go next.

One might try to concentrate on one type of industry one week and then branch out into other field the next week for example. Or even try a few new employment agencies to see what they might have to offer. Sounds more like hunting for fish or crabs. You try to put out the biggest net into the ocean just to see how many you can catch.

When I first became unemployed I use to scramble just about every day to look for work, even on weekends I would spend all my time looking for work. I still do but not as intense, granted it’s not because I have gotten lazy or frustrated. But now a days I try to focus, breathe and concentrate at the task at hand. The stress of looking for work has to be approached with minimal thought and care. For as we all know any type of stress can or could kill a person.

Is the process of looking for work frustrating? My answer is “yes, it is.” But I like many others must go on and search. That is why I try to take a step back when the weekend comes and I try not to think about it that much and actually plan my next move in looking for work. I feel that if I rush to look for work I might find a job that pays way to low and I would not be happy with.

It’s not pride that is holding me back from taking a job that is low in pay. But we all have a limit on how low we will go. After all we do have to take into account our living expenses. And after making cuts to one’s life style, you do have to also take into account how much money you need to function on a day to day basis, such as transportation, lunch, and paying bills and so on.

So weekends for me are very important to use as a time to focus and regroup. And in doing so you may just discover a new idea that might help you in your search for work, an idea that you might have missed if you had rushed through the same process.

Most of my friends ask me “How do I manage looking for work?” My answer is this… “When you feel that you are at a point that you feel that everything is closing in on you. That is when you need to walk away from the computer, Blackberry and just take a moment to yourself.” For when you rush and are in a panic, it could lead to errors that you might have not realized you have made. It’s always better to think things over and refocus at the task at hand.

THE NIGHT SHIFT.

Now don’t let the title above fool you. I still have not found a new job between blog postings. But it is kind of interesting how a person that is unemployed like myself unexpectedly starts a night shift. This shift is not your typical eight hours of work. Could be eight hours or more or even less, it totally depends on what you are willing to put into it.

It’s that time of night when all is said and done with your day and you have completed all your errands and phone calls for whatever you needed to do during the day. And once all is quiet and you know that your friends and family are asleep and will not be calling you on the phone late night.

That is when “the night shift” begins. It’s that time of night when you go online to see if there are any new job postings that you can apply for. After all… the Internet is open twenty-four hours, seven days a week.

We start with the thought “Let’s see if there is anything out there.” And we go from there. Plus the fact that no one will be disturbing you does allow you to concentrate at the task at hand. And sometimes you might find a new job posting that you might have missed before or have not seen. There is kind of a “gun ho” feeling to it. As if you are the first person trying to get to the North Pole.

How so is it like being the first person trying to get to the North Pole you ask? It’s a journey that you may not be able to reach, but it’s worth the risk in taking. You don’t know if you will get there, and you don’t know if you are going to get called for an interview. But you take the risk in trying.

As well when you look for employment late night you might consider options as well that you might not have considered before. You take the time to think what might work for you and you ponder the options that you may have. And in some cases you may even go to bed and think about it and come up with a decision in the morning, or all in good time.

It’s a way to see if you can discover the new job posting first, and be one of the elite few that applies for it ahead of all the other applicants and gets called in for the interview before anyone else does. Mind you there is no guarantee that this will work, but we make an attempt to see if we can pull it off.

It’s a time slot that most people don’t normally work. Unless you have actually worked a night shift before, but when one is unemployed you just might be open to do so. After all come to think of it. If you can spend a few hours late night looking for work, why not try applying for a job with similar hours?

MONDAYS, START OF A NEW WEEK AND A NEW SEARCH.

When Monday comes around most people start what you can say is the “usual routine.” This routine actually starts on Sunday night for most people actually. They start to get ready for the beginning of the new work week and prepare for the week ahead.

Monday’s too many people can be considered a drag. For many of us do not want to go into work after two days off from what might have been a relaxing weekend. Mondays for people who are not working is the start of a new job search.

We start to call our temporary recruiters and see if they might have anything for us work wise or even to see if they might have an interview scheduled for us. And after doing research on the weekend on certain companies, we might apply to them online that we think might be of interest in maybe giving us an interview or even hiring a person such as ourselves.

Usually Mondays for the regular working person is the start of whatever job assignment that they are required to do. Or maybe to even continue an assignment from the previous week, when you are unemployed there is only one assignment and that is to look for new employment once again.

Many of us hate going into work on Mondays for in some cases there could be major drama or office politics that one does not want to get involved with. The only drama that one has when not working is to find work. And of course try to pay the bills then again even when we are working we are trying to pay off our bills, it’s one of the few things that the employed and unemployed have in common.

Actually… there are more things in common other than what was just mentioned. At work one may follow new client leads, for the unemployed its new job leads. Also at work one may look for ways to cut cost and save money. For the unemployed we are often looking to save and stretch our money.

If you look at them (the employed and unemployed) are at two opposite ends of the spectrum. But yet share a similar balance. Mondays and the rest of the work week maybe different to people who are employed and unemployed but the overall task is the same. And that is to get the job done. The job that is assigned to one that is working and the one that needs to be done when not working at the moment.

QUIET MOMENTS AND QUIET DAYS.

When one is unemployed you notice and maybe not even right away that you have all of the sudden a lot of free time on your hands. After all we spend our working lives doing just that “working.” And we schedule other events in our lives around it. We make appointments either before or after work, and we sometimes go to these appointments during our lunch break if one is lucky to get one. And in those rare cases we might just even take a day off from work to take care of personal items.

But once we lose our job the eight or ten hours one works during the day now becomes “free time.” Time that we once had little of now becomes the bulk of a person’s day. At first we are in shock of losing our job and do wonder what to do next. But once we do the things that are needed to be done file for unemployment and so on. We still have more time than we can even imagine and often wonder what to do next.

We try to focus our time trying to send out are resume and maybe go out on an interview if we are lucky to get one. But let’s face it… there is only so much time and effort that one can put into their day when it comes to looking for work. And actually when you think about it looking for work becomes a person’s new job. It just does not pay that well (weekly unemployment checks) but it’s better than nothing at all money wise.

But once you get into the routine of taking the time to search for work and we may just spend all or most of the day doing so. You then realize that there is only so much a person can do in a day. So you try to focus and work on things that you have put off for some time such as going back to school or even pick up a new hobby. We also try to adjust our budgets, pay bills in advance, our personal expenses and things that we treat ourselves to are reviewed closely and in some cases are eliminated.

And some of the things we eliminate does pain us, almost like it’s a death in the family or a very close friend that we have lost. But we adjust and go on with the hopes that we can continue once we are back on track. Even the start of our day’s changes, we go from waking up at the crack of dawn to late morning or afternoon. We all make adjustments one way or another, and in some cased we don’t even realize this until we start to think about it. With all this new free time on ones hands we suddenly become time management experts.

And then of course there are those days when you have done everything that you need to do, and you have no other plans for the current day which leads to boredom. And we try to do things or go to events and or see friends and family to break that boredom. With the sudden abundance of time given to us we constantly think of ways to keep busy. It’s like as if it’s our last day on earth and we have to rush through our bucket list (if you keep one…) before the world ends.

But the world will not end all of a sudden and or life does go on. We all I feel just have to use our free time to the best of our ability and try to maximize the time that we have. Or we can just take the free time to relax and carefully plan what to do next with no rush or pressure at all. The choice on what to do is up to us. But using time to carefully plan does eliminate errors down the line. And once one realizes that the free time they have can be used to the best of their advantage things go a lot easier I feel.

WAITING AND WONDERING.

This past week has been like all the other weeks in my past. Uneventful but busy with errands and sending my resume to places for possible employment and catching up with a friend that I have not seen since they left the United States to start a new job overseas. Seeing them was one of the refreshing events of this past week. But overall an uneventful week like I had said previously, but it was nice to see a good friend that I have not seen in a while, and was a good break from my usual routine.

Now the only major difference with this week unlike all the others is the fact that my unemployment has run out and I am still without a job. Of course I have saved up enough money to hold me over for the next few weeks, but once that runs out it will take living on a daily basis to a whole new level, that level of getting by with no funding at all.

During a person’s day and even with my days, we all wait for things. We wait on lines at the bank; we wait for a bus or a subway to take us where we need to go. We wait in traffic when one waits for the light to change when we are traveling somewhere. We even wait for replies and or phone calls from people who we send our resume to and so on.

But the one thing I think we should not wait for is an extension on unemployment benefits. Now we all know that times are rough for millions of people out there, even in New York state things are not well. Our state is under a budget crunch and strapped for cash. And have even gone as far to withhold people’s state tax return so that they can use the interest to operate the state. It’s a first to my knowledge that they have done this.

And of course our government in Washington D.C. goes on Easter break before even attempting to get an unemployment extension passed. You think they would do so before going on break, but they have not. Waiting to see what happens next just adds more stress to millions of people who are unemployed. It’s just one more factor that people have to think about when planning what to do next, since they are not working.

Personally I think that unemployed people should not have to wait for any type of funding that they are entitled to. We all paid into this via our taxes and will continue to pay into this once we start working again. But it seems that we now have to play this game of “wait and see what happens next” and see who is going to make the first move.

It’s a game that we are all apart of but have no say in it. It’s those in our state capitals and Washington that are calling all the shots. So it just makes me wonder what is going to happen down the line. Are they going to extend benefits on a monthly basis, or until the end of the year?

Any little bit of help is better than no help at all. But we are all left to wonder what is going to happen next. And I feel that should not be. Only time will tell what is going to happen down the line. We may get some sort of funding or maybe even find some type of new work that will help us get back on track. But waiting for what is going to happen leaves us all to wondering what is going to be next for us all.
